For more than 150 years, Hastings' waterfront has been a vital part of the history and character of this community. As steward of that property, Atlantic Richfield Company's (AR) primary focus is to remediate PCB's and other contamination on the site to make it safe for future development, yet AR still recognizes and appreciates the understandable desire on the part of some members of the community to preserve the historical character of the site in some fashion.

For the last several years, AR has worked closely with the Village on the issues of building demolition and preservation. AR has listened closely to and been guided by the Village on these issues.

AR has conducted two major rounds of demolition at the site, removing all structures except for the water tower and Building 52, the brick building with the saw-toothed roof on the northern end of the site. Local preservationists and Village leaders have expressed interested in preserving Building 52 at this time for potential future use. In support of this interest, AR has budgeted $2 million in 2010 and 2011 to assess and stabilize Building 52 prior to future remediation work on the waterfront.
